Southern Human Rights Organizers Conference (SHROC)
SHROC is a bi-annual convening that brings together human rights defenders and activists from the southern region of the US, across the country and world.
The first SHROC – SHROC I – was held at University of Mississippi School of Law, in Oxford, September 19-21, 1996. Just a few months earlier, on May 17th, veteran human rights defender, Attorney Jaribu Hill, convened a meeting of representatives from more than 30 local, regional and national organizations, at Tougaloo College in Tougaloo, MS. At that meeting, a Planning Committee was formed to organize SHROC. SHROC I brought together more than 200 activists and organizers from the Deep South, other parts of the US and the world. In December 2016, SHROC celebrated it’s 20th anniversary at Tougaloo College. Since 1996, SHROCs have been held bi=annually in Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Florida and Alabama.
